District Information Eixample:

At the beginning of the 20st century, the wealthy Catalan upper-class began to move its familiar residence from the old city center to Passeig de Gracia (the main avenue of the Eixample district, only the most powerful and selected could afford to live there.

The competition among families and their architecs reached delirious heights and gave the Passeig de Gracia its best buildings. Casa Lleó Morera, num. 35, the next two buildings (num, 37 and 39) by E. Sagnier, the stunning neo-gothic Casa Amatller, num. 41, Casa Batllo, num. 43 by A. Gaudi, and a long etc.
The quantity and quality of modernist buildings is unrivalled, not only in Barcelona but in any city of the world. It is the defining avenue of the Eixample, a grid like “extension” to the old city center.

Taking Passeig de Gracia as the neuralgical point, the Eixample grew to right and left becoming one of the most exclusive and trendiest districts of Barcelona. The most luxurious boutiques and shops are located in this district.
If you are staying in the Eixample district you can visit almost every site of the old city centre without taking public transport (Plaça Catalunya and Gothic Quarter).

You will find as well the most fashionable restaurants in Barcelona, and for those looking for fun and nightlife the Eixample provides a range of quality bars, cafes and nightclubs all on your door step. To make your stay a truly memorable one.
